The Young Men's Christian Association was founded by a young Londoner named George Williams in 1844. Today, more than 150 years after its inception, the YMCA is one of the largest international youth organisation with over 30 million members represented in more than 120 countries.

A BRIEF HISTORY The seeds for a Chinese YMCA in Singapore were sown on 25 November 1945 by Dr Chen Su Lan and a group of leaders from the Methodist, Presbyterian and Anglican Churches in Singapore. The idea to provide wholesome and meaningful amusement and recreation was conceived at a time of spiraling unemployment, prostitution and organized crime. The Association changed its name to Metropolitan YMCA Singapore in March 1974 to be in line with national and international commitments to offer service to all communities with an inter-racial and non-sectarian outlook.
