Celebrating 23 Years of Service

Mohamed Zainal started his M.Y Journey on 8 May 2001 as a Front Desk Officer and is now a Security Supervisor under Hospitality Services. Being in Metropolitan YMCA for close to 23 years, here’s a special coverage of his journey.

Editor: Can you provide our readers with an overview of your journey and the various roles you have taken on during your tenure at MYMCA?

Zainal: For a span of seven years, I held the position at the Front Desk, where my responsibilities included overseeing the check-in and check-out procedures for both the Hostel and Apartment. Additionally, I assisted guests with a variety of requests and attended to their needs during those times. Now, as a Security Supervisor, I ensure the safety of everyone who enters and exits the facility. Basically, you can say that I am the first line of DEFENCE!

Editor: With over 23 years of experience at the Y, what makes the work fulfilling?

Zainal: Being in the Y all these years, the caring culture has kept me motivated. I deeply appreciate the colleagues that I meet and interact with every day. Our colleagues are friendly and have a caring heart. They express concern for my well-being. Aside from that, I enjoy town hall gatherings. I like engaging with colleagues from different departments. I also like to participate in MYMCA programmes as well. Through these events, it forms a memorable part of my journey in the Y.

Editor: Are there any interesting highlights that you would like to share with everyone?

Zainal: Outside of work, I’m a very active person with many interests. Here are some of them:

  1. I’m an avid cyclist who loves to collect bicycles. I currently own 10 bicycles, with each costing between $800 – $3,000. In my younger days, I cycled to and fro from Yishun and Stevens. These days, I cycle for leisure.
  2. I was an avid long distance runner. In my younger days, I ran to and fro from Yishun and Stevens. As you know, age is catching up with me, so I have stopped running. Want to find out more? Ask me!
  3. I love rabbits! I currently have ten of them – each with its own name.
