Ang Chin Thye, also known as Ah Q to many, began his M.Y journey on 1 August 1989 as a technician in BIDS department. With nearly 35 years of unwavering dedication and service at Metropolitan YMCA, here’s a special coverage of his journey.
Editor: Can you provide our readers with an overview of your journey and the various roles you have taken on during your tenure at MYMCA?
Chin Thye: When I started here, I was doing odd jobs before becoming a technician, conducting maintenance for our buildings. I am often known as a “Bao-Ga-Liao” worker by my fellow colleagues. This term signifies my versatility in handling various maintenance tasks.
Editor: You brought up the term “Bao-Ga-Liao”. How else would your colleagues describe your work style?
Chin Thye: They always describe me as a hardworking individual with a wealth of knowledge.
Editor: With over 35 years of experience at the Y, what makes the work fulfilling?
Chin Thye: I genuinely enjoy the opportunity to interact and collaborate closely with my colleagues. Working at the Y is a fulfilling way for me to occupy my time.
Editor: Are there any interesting memories that you want to share with everyone?
Chin Thye: Yes! Here are two interesting memories:
1. I have seen the transformation of our premises.
Did you know that the Vine Ballroom used to be an auditorium where the Association used to hold different events and exercise classes?
Also, did you know that 58 Stevens Road used to be a bungalow? It was changed to Apartments and now sub-leased out to The Assembly Place.
2. I participated in 2014 APAY International Work Camp held at Iloilo, Philippines together with my boss, Dorcas Yu. The purpose was to engage in charitable activities, such as constructing tables and chairs for a local school that had been impacted by the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Super Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines.
