Shining Through the Years

Shining Through the Years

Meet Hazlina, our radiant expert at Metropolitan YMCA who has journeyed with us since August 2010. With a grin that brightens any room, she is like our guardian who ensures our offices and common areas are spick-and-span.

Not just that, this cleanliness wonder turns our gym into a spotless haven for all fitness fanatics.🌟 Here’s a special coverage of what it has been for her thus far!

Editor: Hello Hazlina! Tell our readers more about your journey with us here, and some of the roles you had.

Hazlina: I started my MYMCA journey at Pasir Ris Student Care Centre (PRSC) as a cleaner. In late 2021, after the closure of PRSC, I was transferred to the Housekeeping department.

Editor: What do you like about working here at MYMCA?

Hazlina: Working here has allowed me to cultivate my independence and enhance my communication and teamwork abilities. Furthermore, my colleagues have shown genuine concern for my well-being, making me enjoy my work even more!

Editor: Would you like to share some interesting things about yourself that you want your fellow colleagues to know about?

Hazlina:

1) I love small soft toys and cats. I’m also particularly fond of the Sanrio character, Hello Kitty! Who isn’t right? I have a pet cat named Mocha that means the world to me! I find long coat cats with stripes and with orange or black coat unique and beautiful. I also like Sphynx, a fur-less cat breed.

2) Some colleagues might not be aware that I have a hearing impairment. I love to connect with people, and here are different ways you can connect with me:

a. Sign language

b. Writing your message on a piece of paper

c. Sending a text message

3) One cherished memory I have was taking the students from Pasir Ris Student Care Centre (PRSC) for an outing to the Flower Dome and Farmer’s Garden. I had such a fun and enjoyable time interacting with the children as they explored and learned through different activities. At PRSC, I enjoyed interacting with the children who were kind and lovable. They were willing to pick up sign language to communicate with me and were always excited to tell me about their day. While I missed being with the children after the centre was closed, I am happy to have been a part of their growing journey. When I was transferred to housekeeping department, I gained a lot of insights about the hospitality industry. It was different from PRSC where the centre was smaller and I interacted more with children. Now in housekeeping, I’m interacting on a different level with my colleagues. While work may be busy at times, especially during peak periods where there are a lot of guests, it still fuels happiness and a sense of satisfaction in me.
